Nanjing Massacre Survivor Xiong Shulan Passes Away
Nanjing Massacre survivor Xiong Shulan passed away on September 27, 2025, at the age of 94.
In 1937, Xiong Shulan was only six years old. Her family consisted of five members, including her father, mother, and older sister. In her recollections, she shared, "In December, we fled to escape the Japanese soldiers, taking a small boat to Jiangxinzhou. Whenever Japanese troops approached, we hid in underground burrows. My mother, who was five months pregnant at the time, fell during the escape and suffered a miscarriage after returning. My aunt, who had bound feet and walked slowly, couldn’t hide in time and was gang-raped by Japanese soldiers. My uncle was brutally killed by the Japanese army." Xiong Shulan recalled that near the current memorial hall in Jiangdongmen, "the corpses were piled horrifically high." She herself survived by shaving her head and disguising herself as a boy.
